Henequen Hacienda (Investment property)
1,170 Acre Ranch
Tekit, Yucatan, Mexico

This incredible piece of property is located 45 minutes to the South East of Merida, capital of the Yucatan, in a lovely town along the touristic convent route called Tekit. The property boasts seven separate cenotes, once considered holy sites by the Mayans. Originally a henequen plantation, one can still see the old stone bedding for the narrow gauge rail running all over the property there is the possibility to reconnect to a working rail line that could run from the main house all the way into the town of Tekit, 10 km away. More recently the property was used as a cattle ranch. The property boasts extensive stone walls, and total privacy. With deep water wells connected to the underground river system, and the old irrigation system largely intact, this property has plentiful water for a wide range of ranching or agricultural uses. The area is known in particular for its quality citrus, honey, mangoes, papaya, habanero peppers, sisal, corn, bamboo and feed grass production all of which are produced successfully in the immediate vicinity. The property needs to be totally restored, a process which can be undertaken by the seller and given at a turnkey price (by separate negotiation). There is a main house, machine house, several outbuildings, corrals, extensive stone walls, and casco. The property has clean title, and the plot is an approximate square of 425 hectares plus a further 49 hectares of land on either side of the private entry road, or approximately 1,170 acres.
About the area:
Tekit is a charming town with its colonial church and convent that is a popular stop along the Convent Route, one of two official tourist routes through the Yucatan. The important Mayan archaeological site of Mayapan is less than 10 minutes away. Other towns in the immediate vicinity include Ticul, famous for its food, sandals, and pottery, and Mama, famous for its convent. Merida, the capital of the Yucatan, is 45 minutes away, and has an extensive range of shopping. The climate is similar to the Florida Keys.
